Do It- Chloe & Halle

This video right here is what I call creative GENIOUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. I have been following these women since they won a singing contest on Disney women. I truly look up to them. To see their most recent transformations is truly impeccable! They most recently are on the cast of Grownish, a TV show highlighting the college experience of people of color. To see them now, with the release of their beautiful was so refreshing.

More about what I resonate with in the video:

I watched this video at first with the perspective of a typical fan and music lover but then I watched it from a perspective of fashion and beauty guru and implemented my new eye in media as well. I must say that the way the video was shot and edited to capture every angle was so well done and exhibited incredibly versatile arrays of what was released as the final product of this video. In terms of the look of the girls, their outfits were very bold and in your face. It was just so beautiful. The title of song is Do It and boyyyyyyyy did they DO IT!!!!!! No stone was left unturn. As for the Makeup and Hair: I love of how these girls uphold their blackness and their features. They literally highlight themselves, love themselves and are definitely spreading that love. The makeup was just enough to aid to their authenticity and add to the overall creativity of the video. These ladies are definitely not afraid to bring their WHOLE self in what they do. These are the kinds of people I aspire to work with in the future!!!

Brain Power Smoothie

Raspberry Green Tea Smoothie

Is it just me or do smoothies taste extra good after a workout? I’m sure it’s because I’m a little dehydrated so any kind of liquid sounds good, but the thought of refreshing fruit and creamy yogurt all combined in a cold drink really gets me excited after a big sweatfest!

We all have heard the saying you are what you eat… Well, why not embody that through a delicious smoothie. But not just any smoothie, a Brain Power smoothie!!! Yes you are getting your nutrients and powering your brain all at the same time. I actually first came across this smoothie when I was putting together a health and wellness educational program as an RA for my residents. The fan favorite was the Raspberry Green Tea Smoothie. Raspberries are known for:

  1. being low in sugar
  2. being rich in anti-aging antioxidants
  3. protecting you from cancer
  4. being high in fiber
  5. helping prevent diabetes
  6. sharpening your brain and memory

I am pre diabetic and suffer from some memory loss so this smoothie helps me stay on track to perform better through my daily endeavors. Try it. You won’t regret it :)))

Exercise, Exercise, Exerciseee

A huge part of beauty to many people is looking as good on the outside as they do on the inside. This means that one’s physical and mental health are both taken care of. One way that my sister and I are living by this are by participating in health fitness trainer, Chloe Ting’s, shred challenge. For me personally, exercising has helped me tremendously with my mental health. It has allowed me to view myself in a more positive light and has changed my perspective drastically in terms of how I view myself and how I bring myself forth. Since I started working out more I have noticed positive changes in myself, my work ethic, and an increase in productivity in my academics. This was challenging to maintain during quarantine but I am happy to still have a little something to do while at home to maintain my mental and physical health. I can’t wait to see even more results. Chloe Ting’s workouts are some of the most amazing at home workouts that I have ever encountered! It’s a YES from my sister and I! 🙂

Turmeric Face Mask 101

So recently I started using turmeric face masks. Some of the benefits of the turmeric in this mask are that it can help prevent breakouts (and lessen active ones), it can fight eczema and psoriasis, it can reduce acne scarring, it can brighten dark circles, and it can bring out your natural glow. I personally have been using this mask to help with my eczema, dark circles from lack of skin and to brighten my skin. With quarantine taking place, my skin complexion is getting lighter which is exposing some dark marks I have that I would like to get ride of. I haven’t been as consistent with this mask as I would like to be, but I must say for the two times I have used it, I have seen major improvements to my skin. I can’t wait to have more time to be able to do this mask more consistently so that I can see even more results. For anyone looking to do this mask I recommend doing your research, testing out the mask on your forearm to ensure that the mask would work for you and not be too sensitive for your face. I also recommend having a consistent routine so that you can see the desired results in a more timely fashion. Even if this mask isn’t for you, look up other ones. There are tons out there, it’s just a matter of finding the one that works best for you 🙂

COVID-19

Uhhhhhhhhh I am sure we all want life to go back to normal right about now. I miss the way things were and am even more disheartened by not being able to take my Senior pictures, not being able to finish out my last semester on campus, not having senior week, and not having my graduation on May 23rd 😦 I was so excited I wanted my family to wear all white and was going to wear a fuchsia dress. But, I try not to think about it because it is for our safety that we are in quarantine and I am hopeful that there will be a positive side to all of this. When the time comes, I will have my moment to shine. But COVID-19, I want you to go away. You already infected me and my family and millions of others and have taken away so much. Just go away. This isn’t the way things were supposed to be. 2020 is just not a good year from Kobe Bryant, to Pop Smoke, to COVID-19, to a shortened senior year, to a postponed graduation. I just don’t understand, but again trying to remain as positive as I can be and honestly, I don’t think I’m doing a great job at that.

P.S I got the results for my COVID-19 test and it came back negative. WOO-HOOOOOOO

Being Afro- Latina

“Are you Black? Are you Jamaican? Are you African? No waitttt, you’re Dominican right?” If I had a dollar for every time I was asked one of these questions, I’d be a millionaire!

Growing up, I was very confused about myself and how I would identify myself to another person. During those times my parents would only identify as Garifunas. Garifuna people were enslaved people who escaped from the island of St. Vincent who are of Carib, Arawak, and African that ended up arriving on the Caribbean coast of Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, and Nicaragua beginning in the early 1600s. Once they arrived, they established and maintained their very own unique culture, dialect, and maintained their way of life even around the mestizo people (native Indians to these coastal regions). Cool right??? Well, little old me was ashamed of this culture and group and did everything to never bring it up for fear of being made of. So I let the people around me question me and be confused as to how and why I knew how to speak Spanish fluently. Eventually I grew tired of it and grew tired of people trying to pinpoint me to something I am not. It wasn’t until college that I discovered the word “Afro-Latina.” I finally came across a way of identifying myself that encompassed my blackness and my Latinidad. I still get upset when people try to guess at what I am instead of flat out asking but the change now is impeccable. I am Afro- Latina by way of Garifuna Hondurans 🙂

Maximum Hydration Method YAYYYYYYY

SOOOOOO, this past winter left my hair DRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I just had to do something about it. So I remember coming across a woman on Broadway Street in NYC and asking her how her hair looked so moisturized and how her curls were so defined? Her answer to me was simple ” The maximum Hydration method.” I went and researched the method instantly and found that there were too many steps and too many days for the procedure for my busy city girl lifestyle. I was working one job from 8am- 3pm and the other job from 5pm- 11pm to get home at about 2am and 3am because of summer train constructions to have to wake up and do the same thing all over again. UHHHHHHHHHHH the pay was beautiful but I was D R A I N E D. Anywho… back to the real purpose of this post lol. I still somewhat have a very busy lifestyle and you would think it would be the complete opposite while in quarantine right??? NO, not for this girl. But, I somehow carved out some self-care time to do this method on my hair. with each step I would do some homework in between until I was done. I must say, I have never seen my hair so hydrated and with more DEFINED curls than I’ve ever seen before. And they said Type 4 textured hair girls would never be able to curl. This method proves that wrong!

Jlaure Cosmetics- Say whattttttttttttt

Rainbow Bright Stack

Get your favorite neon pigments all in a perfect stacker! Don’t forget each row of the stacker hold 50% more product than individual pigments ! This stacker contains : Love Spell Atomic Bomb Kryptonite Purple Reign Venus Flytrap Ultra Glo Blue

I recently just purchased the Jlaure Cosmetics Rainbow Bright Stack and I must say that I am in L O V E. This is the most amazing eye makeup I have ever purchased. So worth it!!!!! You’re probably wondering what exactly is a rainbow bright stack??? Well, the stack consists of 7 neon eye shadow pigments. It is totally different from a typical eye shadow as pigments are a loose powder and have much more intense color effect than an eye shadow would. Although difficult to use, the pigments just add another element to an eye shadow look, if executed correctly, of course. I actually just had a quarantine photo shoot using this pigments with my sister and I. I call her look “Space Orange” and mine “High Fashion Highlighters.”

The Black Panthers Scene Analysis

https://marist.kanopy.com/video/black-panthers-0

I chose to analyze the scene at the last eight minutes because I loved the zoom in to the building. It was like a signal that I had to wait for what’s to come next. Then I saw the Interviewer talking and giving her perspective on the topic at hand. Then, my favorite part of the scene was the transitioning into the black and white film with the letters of the writing depicted floating around and moving in different directions on the screen. I wonder if I can do something like that with my video. However, of course, my video will be exhibiting makeup so I’m thinking I will have the names of my favorite brands floating across a portion of my video. I also do want to zoom in on maybe my face as I am doing my makeup or the items I use. I’m not sure if I can even make this all happen but I am optimistic and willing to take on the challenge. It was done in the film so clearly it can be done, I just have to figure the media behind the scenes created and do my best to make them happen.

The Black Panthers Media Analysis

https://marist.kanopy.com/video/black-panthers-0

There are 2 major aspects that I chose to explore while in college aside from my major in Business: Human Resources. Those are the history of race in america and anything that falls under beauty (especially cosmetology). I was thrilled to see The Black Panthers on the list of media to chose from. Coincidentally, I had already seen this film during a course I had seen at Marist, The Black Freedom Struggle in America. However, then I was seeing the film from the eye of a historian and inquisitive student looking to piece the story together about race in America. Now, while my old perspective still applies… I got the chance to watch the film from a media perspective. The quality back then really wasn’t so bad although there is a major difference from the quality we see now and the quality we know of from older films. Furthermore, the transitions between the film of the time frame of the black panthers and the people speaking in 2015 are too much of then and now. I feel like this could have been executed better to tell me more of a story. After watching the film, I saw a comment by a woman named Ana that said that the film, “Throws the visionary, Huey under the bus. Tips a bit too far over into style vs. substance.” When I read the part about more style vs. substance in relation to the film, this was my reaction 😮 I felt like there was a perfect balance of both and that only the transitioning threw me off. Then I began to think about how I actually studied the story of The Black Panthers and maybe that creates a bit a of bias in how I’m viewing the media aspects of the film. Despite this overall, I think the film is presented effectively and bring film from the past into the present to utilize the modern aspects we see in media today.
